Sulle note malinconiche di un addio, si spegne ICQ, il fiore che ha profumato i primi passi della comunicazione istantanea online. Era il 1996 quando un gruppo di cinque informatici israeliani, illuminati da un’idea tanto semplice quanto rivoluzionaria, diede vita a Mirabilis e al suo fiore simbolo: ICQ. Un software destinato a stravolgere il modo di comunicare, connettendo persone da ogni angolo del pianeta in tempo reale.
ICQ: l’alba di un’era digitale
In un mondo dominato da email e forum online, l’intuizione di Mirabilis era semplice ma geniale: un sistema per chattare in tempo reale, con un’interfaccia intuitiva e la possibilità di conoscere persone nuove. Bastava registrarsi, ottenere un UIN (il proprio numero identificativo) e il gioco era fatto. La diffusione avvenne in modo virale, grazie al passaparola sui primi siti web e newsgroup. Non servivano campagne pubblicitarie, ICQ si propagava come un fiore selvatico, alimentato dall’entusiasmo di utenti incuriositi da questa nuova frontiera della comunicazione.
Funzionalità innovative e un successo travolgente
ICQ non era solo semplice da usare, era ricco di funzionalità che all’epoca sembravano fantascienza: la possibilità di vedere la digitazione in tempo reale, le chat di gruppo, la ricerca di utenti tramite UIN o nickname. Un vero e proprio antesignano di sistemi di messaggistica che avrebbero dominato il futuro, come WhatsApp e Messenger. Il successo fu travolgente: nel 2001, ICQ raggiunse i 100 milioni di iscritti, un numero incredibile per l’epoca.
AOL, l’ascesa e la discesa
Nel 1998, la statunitense America Online (AOL) fiutò il potenziale di ICQ e acquisì Mirabilis per circa 300 milioni di dollari. Iniziò così un nuovo capitolo per il software, che sotto la spinta di AOL raggiunse un pubblico ancora più vasto. Tuttavia, il trionfo fu effimero. L’ascesa di nuovi competitor come Skype (2003) e l’esplosione dei social network segnarono il declino di ICQ. Gli utenti, attratti da novità e piattaforme più complete, iniziarono ad abbandonare il fiore virtuale.
Passaggi di proprietà e tentativi di rilancio
Nel 2010, AOL, ormai in fase di declino, vendette ICQ alla società russa Mail.Ru, proprietaria del social network VK. Seguirono anni di tentativi di rilancio, culminati nel 2020 con il lancio di ICQ New. Ma il tempo di ICQ era ormai passato. I suoi 10 milioni di utenti mensili, contro i 42 milioni dell’epoca d’oro, non erano sufficienti a sostenerlo.
La fine di un’era e i ricordi che restano
Il 26 giugno 2024, ICQ smetterà di esistere. Un epilogo malinconico per un pioniere che ha segnato un’epoca. Ma il suo ricordo rimarrà vivo nella memoria di chi ha vissuto quegli anni, di chi ha scambiato i primi messaggi online, di chi ha sentito il suono inconfondibile dell’ “oh-oh” che annunciava un nuovo messaggio. ICQ è stato più di un software, è stato un simbolo di un’epoca, un tassello fondamentale nella storia della comunicazione online. Un fiore virtuale appassito, ma il suo profumo rimarrà sempre impresso nell’etere digitale.
